Unofficial UMW Minutes

January 21, 2008                                                                            UMW General Meeting

The general meeting was called to order by the president, Doris Davis.  Everyone was welcomed and the UMW Purpose was read in unison. A handout of officers and their responsibilities was passed out to the members and Doris reiterated the need for a 39 and Under Representative.

Rachel Shade gave the devotion on God given talents that develop whenever we let God take over and Harriet Byrd offered the prayer.

Sue Davis gave the secretary’s report. The minutes were read and approved and the calendar received some additions and corrections. The July 5 Bake Sale will still take place. Because Food Lion will be having their Children’s Miracle Network fundraiser, the bake sale will be moved down the sidewalk instead of in front of Food Lion.

Sally Scott and Jill Strohpaul will be planning a new circle that will focus on art and reaching out to those in the community and church that are unable to get out.

Anita Phillips gave the treasurer’s report. There is  $123.00 in the account. Offerings collected amounted to $450.00. At the meeting on Saturday, Anita reported that the terminology “pledge” was giving way to “offering”.  The yard sale monies have not been deposited yet. Anita passed out a handout that explained about our mission giving. A table was also set up with different ways to give and explanations. The money our unit collects will be disbursed in the following way: 60% will go to missions and 40% will stay with the local unit.

Doris Davis gave out Special Mission Recognition pins and certificates to Virginia Platts, Barbara Schilling and Johnsie Smith. The pins can be purchased and given to anyone with the cost beginning at $40.00.

The Jacksonville sub-district meeting will be held Sunday afternoon, Feb. 3, at 2:30 in Swansboro. It will last about 2 hours. Second Chance Mission will be speaking and asked that UMW members bring donations of paper towels, dishwashing liquid, toilet paper, soap, etc..

The first mission study on globalization will be March 1 at Shady Grove UMC. The second will be on Israel and Palestine at Atlantic UMC and the third will be Music and Missions at Bethlehem UMC. All begin at 9:30 on a Saturday and ask that you bring a sandwich.

Harriet Byrd has ordered the books on the Reading List for UMW. The books on the children’s list have also been ordered. She will be getting them ready for checkout.

Sally Scott presented the program on Membership and Nurture. All members were given a bag to decorate and fill up and return on Feb. 10. Someone will be taking them to members of the church and community for Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day cards were made and a good time was had by all.

Barbara Schilling gave the closing prayer and Doris Davis dismissed the meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Sue Davis
