November 21, 1008
PREACHER'S NOTES: Folks:
We've been making Thanksgiving preparations for some time now: coordinating menu items with family members, making sleeping arrangements, counting plates and chairs. While the significance of this holiday is probably very similar to that in every other home of our congregation, this one warms my heart in a most special way. We will welcome all the members of the Staton Family to our new home for Thanksgiving Dinner. We'll catch up on all the news and we'll remember those no longer among us.
We'll give thanks to God for each other, for our homes, and for these United States. You can be sure that your Pastor and Miss Emma will whisper a prayer of sincere gratitude for our wonderful congregation at Faith Harbor. We hope your Thanksgiving is full of warmth, fellowship, gratitude, and hope.
Love, Preacher

JIM VAUGHN’S STEWARDSHIP MOMENT: A True Story
“His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while trying to eke out a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the bog. There, mired to the waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what could have been a slow and terrifying death. “The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman’s sparse surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved. “‘I want to repay you,’ said the nobleman. ‘You saved my son’s life.’ “‘No, I can’t accept payment for what I did,’ the Scottish farmer replied, waving off the offer. At that moment, the farmer’s own son came to the door of the family hovel. “‘Is that your son?’ the nobleman asked. “‘Yes,’ the farmer replied proudly. “‘I’ll make you a deal. Let me take him and give him a good education. If the lad is anything like his father, he’ll grow to be a man you can be proud of.’ “And that he did. In time, Farmer Fleming’s son graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known throughout the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin. “Years afterward, the nobleman’s son was stricken with pneumonia. What saved him? Penicillin. “The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill. His son’s name? Sir Winston Churchill. “Someone once said what goes around comes around. “Jesus said it another way: ‘Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be poured into your lap’ (Luke 6:38).” [Trinity Times, Sammie Rainey]

Last Sunday was Consecration Sunday and it was a huge success on many levels. First and foremost we thank God for working in our individual hearts to answer the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?” Second, I would like to thank you all for rising to the challenge during these difficult economic times. Third, I thank all who were involved in making this program happen. Many hours of hard work by many of you went into this project. I thank the Stewardship Committee under the chairmanship of Dave Strohpaul, the New Consecration Team for their efforts in planning the program and scheduling special events, and those who made posters, phone calls, stuffed envelopes and mailed letters, provided music during the service, made announcements from the pulpit on three Sunday mornings, ushered, coordinated events on successive Sunday mornings, extracted financial information from past years giving patterns and tabulated Sunday’s results while the rest of us enjoyed the meal. I would like to thank the UMM for setting up and taking down the tables and chairs in the sanctuary, the wonderful ladies who became the Faith Harbor Caterers for this event and worked long hours to prepare and serve the Celebration Luncheon, Thank you Reverend Staton for your advice and leadership all along the way and a special thank you to our guest leader Reverend Bruce Stanley who brought us inspiration.
Preliminary Statistical Report:
1. A total of 87 giving units were present to fill our Estimate of Giving Cards last Sunday morning.
2. These 87 units committed a total of $267,654 toward the church’s budget for next year.
3. Of these 87 giving units (husbands and wives or single persons), 69 units increased their financial commitment above their last year’s amount.
4. Based on last year’s giving records, we can expect to receive $37,077 during the coming year from people who have consistent giving patterns during the past twelve months, but were not present last Sunday.
5. Based on the average total of loose offerings during the past three years, we can expect to receive $13,125 during the coming year from that source.
6. This gives us a grand total of $317,856 anticipated income for the next twelve months.
7. The total income for our general operating budget during the last twelve months was $290,177.
8. Next year, we can expect our operating budget income to increase by $27,679.
These figures do not include persons who were not present and therefore not given the opportunity to complete an Estimate of Giving Card. Letters containing Cards will be mailed to those persons this week.
This was the first formal stewardship program undertaken in our church since we have been in the new building. Because of all of you with a Servant’s Heart, and to the glory of God, it was a monumental success.
Thank you all:
In Christ,
Jim

PREACHER'S NOTES: Folks:
Reverend Bruce Stanley and I worked together on the Conference Board of Missions on a number of projects, most notably The Russia Initiative. Our Bishop Marion Edwards was the head of the campaign, directed at building a United Methodist seminary in the heart of Moscow. A high moment in my years of ministerial service was the meeting at which we chose our particular part of the project: the Chapel. At $250,000, this was the costliest of the ventures, which included classrooms, offices, and the like, selected by other Conferences.
In our four-year time frame, with Bruce and the Bishop leading the way, our funds were raised and submitted. Miss Emma and I visited about 30 different churches in the campaign, bringing a table display, a guitar, and a song. Some day in the future I can tell you how that fulfilled a promise made many years ago. But right now, let me say that having Bruce come to Faith Harbor is as satisfying as anything I've had happen in ministry. I hope you will come to hear him Sunday morning.
Love, Preacher

JIM VAUGHN’S STEWARDSHIP MOMENT: The Spiritual Nature of Money
In his remarks prior to the offering at a men’s retreat, a Colorado pastor said, “We never take collections at these events. We do, however, receive an offering.” He was stating an important truth about Christian stewardship. Receiving an offering is quite different from fund raising. Offerings are a spiritual matter in which we give ourselves to God’s causes. Fund raising, on the other hand, is a financial matter in which we give our money to pay the bills for a good cause. That is an important distinction. In our worship service each Sunday, we are not just taking a collection to pay the bills; that would be fund raising. No, we are receiving an offering. When we give an offering, we give more than money. That is the major reason that churches ask people to give money as part of the worship service each Sunday—because our giving of money helps us to give a far more important gift: ourselves.

This Sunday November 16th is our stewardship Sunday which is called New Consecration Sunday. It is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. This program encourages us toward proportionate and systematic giving in a response to the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?”
During the morning worship service this Sunday, we will be asking our members and regular attendees to make their financial commitments to our church’s missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries by completing an Estimate of Giving card. We encourage all people to attend this service even if some of you are unable to complete a card. The procedure will be done in such a way that no one feels embarrassment if he or she does not participate.
We will have a dynamic quest speaker this Sunday. Reverend Bruce Stanley will deliver a sermon entitled “Not Mine to Give.” Bruce is the current Director and CEO of the NC Methodist Home for Children and is well known to many of you.
There will be a catered Celebration Luncheon as part of this weeks worship service. This will be an early lunch so I advise you not to eat a big breakfast before coming to church. The menu will consist of: Beef tips over rice; green beans; sweet potato casserole; congealed salad; rolls; and assorted beverages and desserts. Remember this is not a cover dish luncheon. You are our guest some come hungry and prepare to relax and enjoy the meal.
Martha Vaughn
Celebration Sunday is the 16th, this Sunday. When you arrive for church the Sanctuary will be set for lunch. Don’t be alarmed when you cannot find your regular seat. View it as an adventure, have fun and enjoy the meal. Lunch will be ready immediately following the end of the service, and we have a special menu for the children. (mac and cheese and chicken nuggets) There will be no Sunday School this week. The poinsettia sign up sheet will be on the bulletin board until Sunday Nov. 30th. They are $12 each and must be paid in advance. A manila envelope is there for your checks or give the money to me any Sunday. Use the index cards to denote “in memory or in honor of”. These will be printed in the bulletin. Remember to take your flower home after the Christmas Eve service. This service will be at 6PM and refreshments will be available afterward. We open this to the community and Faith Harbor members will act as hosts/hostesses and provide the refreshments. More on this later. Sunday Nov. 30th is the first Sunday in Advent. This will be the first Sunday of the Advent wreath.
Harriet Byrd
For the past few years many of us have celebrated Thanksgiving dinner at the church. PREACHER'S NOTES:
One of these days I can catch you up on my Walk to Emmaus weekend. And you have other dedicated church leaders giving witness to our commitment to Christian Stewardship in its many facets.
Today my mind and heart are concerned with the passing of my friend Rodney Knowles. His father and mine were close friends, serving as Methodist Ministers of the Gospel for years. My own regard for Rodney was such that I included him on my evaluation committee. His wife, Linda, his daughter Kile and the rest of his family are warm and affable people. Rodney was an inspiring friend and leader we will miss. We commend his spirit to God. Love, Preacher

STEWARDSHIP MOMENT FROM JIM VAUGHN: From Stewardship Nuggets First Fruits and First Checks
“Travel with me in your mind to a setting that occurred thousands of years ago in the desert. We see multitudes of people full of joy approaching the tabernacle of God. They are coming with their sacrifices and tithes to give thanks to God for all that He has done. As we approach the tabernacle we see the beautiful blue, purple, and scarlet drapes hanging to the ground. After entering the tabernacle we see a huge bronze altar, forever burning. After walking a short distance, our nostrils are filled with the smell of incense. We see the curtains surrounding the Holy Place, and we know behind those curtains lie the Most Holy Place—the place where God lives, on top of the Arc between the cherubs. We are there to offer sacrifices and give a tenth to the Lord, our first fruits. “Today, we don’t offer animal sacrifices to God. However, we can still celebrate all that God has done for us by bringing our tithes before the Lord. We know the Lord does not live on top of a box behind a curtain. Our God is here in this place, among us now, ready to accept our gifts! “About eight or nine years ago, my wife Georgia and I joined LakeRidge. At that time we had several college loans, a car payment, a young daughter, etc. etc. Boy, were we giving and giving. The typical beginning of the month was to pay all the bills. Then give to the church what was left over. Which I can assure you was not very much. “A short time later, we were challenged to participate in the ‘Forward in Faith’ campaign. Our first response was, ‘We can’t give more to the church, we barely make it now.’ However, we sought God and trusted Him and we took what felt like a gigantic leap of faith.
“Realizing that we were doing things backwards, the next month I did things in reverse. I wrote the first check to our church. I paid the bills with what was left. At the end of the month, we had made it!
“The Bible makes the purpose of tithing very clear—to put God first in our lives. We are to give God the first and the best of what we earn. What we do first with our money shows what we value most. Giving the first part of our earnings to God immediately focuses our attention on Him. It also reminds us that all we have belongs to Him. A habit of regular tithing keeps God at the top of our priority list and gives us proper perspective on everything else we have. “The need I have as a giver to give is more important than the need of the church to receive. When we show gratitude and love for God’s blessings by putting His check first rather than last, we are practicing the principle of first fruits giving that we read about in the Bible. When we do that, we get the results the Bible promises. We receive more than we give….
“What are you putting first? What do you trust—your money or God? When will you take a leap of faith?” [Kent Winter, Lubbock, Texas]

Sue Davis for Prayer Shawl Ministry
We would like to take this opportunity to let you know that we greatly appreciate the donations you have given to help us fund our ministry. During our first year, we gave 51 shawls. This year, since January, we have provided 84 shawls to those in need of prayer. It takes about 30 hours of prayer and about $20.00 to make one shawl. We are branching out next year and hope to provide the neonatal unit of the Naval Hospital with baby blankets. In this way, our outreach will focus on children. This will be in addition to the ones we provide for adults. These are small, easy to knit, and will not take long. We need knitters and crocheters to help us continue this worthwhile ministry. As we get ready to start another year, we ask that you pray for us and our hands. We are passionate about our shawl ministry and consider it to be an honor and a privilege to be a part of it. If you or someone you know are in need of a prayer shawl, please call or email Sue Davis at 910-463-4207 or sdavis2ster@gmail.com. The Prayer Shawl Ministry's supper meeting will be Friday night, Nov. 7th at 6:30 at the home of Lois Snyder. Please make plans to attend. We would love to have you join us! First time knitters are provided a set of needles and yarn.

FHUMC Christmas Craft Fair: I have had a tremendous response from vendors for the craft fair and only have a few booth spaces left. If any of you would still like to have a booth, please fill out the contract form found on the credenza and get it to Lois Snyder as soon as possible. The men's group will be selling BBQ that day by the pint or sandwiches which I know will be great! They can cook some GOOD BBQ. If any other groups wish to have food sales please let me know. This is an excellent fund raising opportunity. We are asking for 25% of the food profits for that day to go to the general fund and the rest goes back to your group. Sign up sheets for the set up and clean up crews will be in church on November 2nd. Please be in prayerful consideration of volunteering some of your time for this effort! Thanks for all that you do!!

MIKE'S FARM
We again have the opportunity celebrate the Christmas season with a trip to Mike's Farm. This trip includes a meal and a hayride that showcases beautiful music and Christmas lights. This trip is back do to popular demand but I would like to present a twist and a challenge to this year's trip. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could include some folks who couldn't even consider doing such a trip themselves. I don't know exactly how to do this at this point but I'm in prayer about it and welcome any of your suggestions also. This could be a way to take something that we enjoy and let it serve two purposes. This could be an opportunity for outreach and God calls on all of us to reach out to others and to show who we are by our love. I cannot take credit for this idea and am so thankful for Donna Taylor for planting the seed in my mind. I'm sure all of us remember seeing an event we were used to through someone else’s eyes and experiencing how special the ordinary became. I sat near Rev. Jesse and Miss Emma on the hayride last year and had so much fun watching their reaction to the lights I forgot to look at the lights myself for much of the hayride. Why can't we give this opportunity to others? Please think and pray about this and let me know how you feel. The specifics on the trip will be available at the end of October so that gives us some time to listen for the voice of God. I am excited to see what WE come up with.
Love in Christ, Lois

PREACHER'S NOTES:
Folks:
Boyoboy! That Yard Sale was one BIG WEEKEND, wasn't it? Thanks again to Mike and Sally and the Steering Committee and to everyone else whose "elbow grease" made it so special and so profitable for our ministries.
Several of us have another big weekend. We're part of a group of Faith Harbor Men participating in the Emmaus Walk. As you read this, we will already be deep in spiritual life exploration. I always ask you to "Pray for the Preacher." This time your prayers are coveted for all of the group traveling the Emmaus way. Each one has felt a calling to be present for this particular Walk.
Your prayers are also invited for those who will lead Faith Harbor worship this Sunday: Barbara Starr, Sherry Mewborn, Dawn Ellis, and for Jim Vaughn, who will bring the message, "The Second Mile."
So, it's a big weekend for several reasons. I hope it is a "big weekend" for all of our congregation as you each walk a bit closer with our Lord. . Preacher

FROM FINANCE COMMITTEE - If anyone has any expenses (items purchased or paid in the name of the yard sale) that they would like reimbursed, please fill out an expense voucher (they are on the white credenza) and put in Bill Moore's box. If possible, all expenses need to be paid before the Leadership Meeting, Oct. 30th. Please contact Sandy Taylor - 338.0807 if you can help with this important "Servant" function. In Christ, Sandy
STEWARDSHIP MOMENT FROM JIM VAUGHN: From Stewardship Nuggets: Treasure Management
“Matthew 6:21 says, ‘Where your treasure is, there your heart is also.’ That means wherever I put my money shows my priorities. If I put my money in my house, that is where my heart is. If I put my money in eating out, . . . if I put my money in my clothes, if I put my money into a hobby, that’s where my heart is. So the question then becomes, where do you want your heart to be? Wherever you want your heart to be, that is where you need to put your money. Every time you give back to God, you draw closer to him.”
EMAILS –
Mike and Sally Scott - A message to the congregation from Sally and Mike for the Yard Sale Committee
A special thank you to all who donated goods, cash, time, energy or prayer to our annual yard sale. Without these, the event would not have been the success that it was. Yes, the final figure earned will be around $24,000 when all monies are in hand. Even on a rainy, cool day – without the cars and boats that we’ve had in past sales. Our youth took in over $1200 from the food court. Thanks so much to our wonderful cooks who contributed cakes, pies, cookies, etc.; and to those men who cooked the pig and provided the slaw makings given by Mollies and the IGA. The brand new cookbook designed by Donna Taylor and the Rainbow Circle and the prayer book done by Tanya Strickland and Donna Taylor (with quotes from our youngest to God) were on display during the sale and were well received. While the dollars earned during the event were considerable and will be the seed money toward our future mission work here and abroad, there were many other needs met. Our sale touched many with needs arising from poverty or just a down-turn in the economy. The post-script from various departments proves this: form the story of the 10 year old who left with his very first bed with all the linens – to the children’s clothing section where so many found their need met with overflowing generosity. Still, remnants of the yard sale were boxed to be delivered to twice goods, clothing to the women’s shelter; new children’s games and toys to Nurses Pediatric Ward Project, \; soft back books to a military operation’ and a large array of furniture for a Pender County Half Way House supported and sponsored by one of our members, Jim Graziano; and jewelry and boutique items to another yard sale benefiting senior citizens in nursing homes. Let us be proud of ourselves as a church fellowship that worked together to achieve these ends, but thank God for the opportunity to use our talents to help our neighbors.

To all of our ladies,
Please plan to attend our Women's tea next Saturday, November 1st from 2:00pm to 4:00pm here at the church. You do not need to be a member of UMW or even a member or Faith Harbor to attend. We will be joining with the pastors and women from our community churches for a time of fellowship and a time to share ideas of how to better serve our community. If you have any questions please contact Lois Snyder at 346-2686 or snyderss@live.com.

Folks,
The surge of our Yard Sale approaches like a tsunami, a wave that roars, lifts, rearranges – whew! Before we get swept up, however, I must call your attention to a warm and quiet gathering at Casey & Jennifer Taylor’s home last Friday. Several of our young adults, couples, and some young‘uns enjoyed the hospitality, the grilled burgers and hot dogs; and most of all the prospect of future gatherings and engagement in Christian ministry at Faith Harbor. Special thanks to the Taylors.
Now, back to the tsunami, excuse me, the Yard Sale! It’ll be work clothes and toothy smiles and I can’t wait! Preacher

THE TRUSTEES wish to remind everyone that any time the church building is used, the responsible party who has a key must ensure the following are accomplished. All interior doors must be closed. This is a fire safety issue and an economic issue as it costs more to keep the building temperatures regulated. Please check that the refrigerator and freezer are closed tight. If any thermostats were adjusted, please return them to 73 degrees. Turn out all lights except those near the sanctuary doors and ensure that all exterior doors are locked by pulling them to verify they are latched. Thank you.
YARD SALE MOVE DAY is this Sunday. Plan to wear casual clothes, bring a snack and help move the Yard Sale items inside for next week’s preparation and Saturday’s BIG YARD SALE DAY.
RODNEY KNOWLES would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers and especially for his prayer shawl that Rev. Jesse delivered to him on Tues. Rodney is doing well and looking forward to returning to the area soon.

STEWARDSHIP MOMENT FROM JIM VAUGHN: From Stewardship Nuggets
Why Should I Tithe?
Eight Reasons from God’s Word
1. Because God commands it. ‘A tenth of all you produce is the Lord’s, and it is holy.’ Lev. 27:10
2. Because Jesus commands it. ‘Yes, you should tithe, and you shouldn’t leave the more important things undone either.’ Matt. 23:23
3. Tithing demonstrates that God has first place in my life. ‘The purpose of tithing is to teach you to always put God first place in your life.’
4. Tithing reminds me that everything was given to me by God! ‘Always remember that it is the Lord your God who gives you the ability to produce wealth.’ Deut. 8:18
5. Tithing expresses my gratitude to God. ‘How can I repay the Lord for all his goodness to me?’ Ps. 116:12 ‘Each of you should bring a gift in proportion to the way the Lord your God has blessed you.’ Deut. 16:17
6. God Says that refusing to tithe is stealing from Him! ‘God says, “Will a man rob God? Yet you are
robbing me!” but you ask, “How do we rob you?” God says “In tithes and offerings. …Bring your whole tithe
to My house.”’ Mal. 3:8-10
7. Tithing gives God a chance to prove God exists and wants to bless you! ‘Bring your whole tithe to My storehouse. Test me in this’ says the Lord, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you won’t have room enough for it!’… Malachi 3:10
8. Tithing proves that I really love God. ‘(Jesus) If you really love me, do what I command.’ John 14:

WOMEN'S TEA
Hello ladies,
I would like to take this opportunity to formally invite each of you to our Women's Tea on November 1st from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Faith Harbor. We are also inviting the women's groups and Pastors from all of our community churches. Our theme for this year's tea is "We are the Church" and we intend to celebrate and showcase what all the different women's groups are doing in outreach and ways that our churches can help to join in or support one another with this outreach effort. Our work in mission to the people outside our churches is one of the most vital things that God calls on us to do and when we join together and share resources, we can accomplish great things! During our program the different churches will be given an opportunity to tell about their important projects and will also be given an opportunity to display the things that their churches are involved in. This will be a time of sharing and networking. We will meet new friends and find out different ways to become the hands of Christ. I am excited and honored to be in charge of this year's program and welcome any of your questions or suggestions. Please do not hesitate to contact me! Love in Christ! CRAFT FAIR
To all of our crafters or people who know crafters, we still have eight spaces open for our December the 6th craft fair. You do not need to be a member of Faith Harbor to be a vendor at this event. I have some awesome folks coming and am really looking forward to this event. To give all of you a snapshot of what to expect we will be having quilts, ceramics, wood items, jewelry, plants, jams and kit goods, homemade soaps, cookbooks, baked goods, Rada knives and soup mixes and I even have a young lady coming who does face painting and makes balloon animals. Keep in mind that this is just a snapshot of what will be offered that day. I am hoping to have many of our groups selling food items so if you are interested in that, please contact me. This event cannot happen without your support. I am in need of set up and clean up people. On Friday the 5th of Dec., I need a group of people to meet with me at the church at 10:00 am to move all of the chairs in the sanctuary and tape off the vendor spaces. That evening, I need a group of people who can help the vendors who wish to set up that evening move their things in. Set up for the vendors is from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on that Friday evening. On Saturday morning I need another group to help the rest of the vendors set up from 7:00 to 9:30 am. The craft fair will be over at 2:00 pm on Saturday and then the sanctuary needs to be put back to rights so that the children can have it at 4:00 pm. Anyone who can spare even 15 minutes would be greatly appreciated. I will have sign up sheets available for all of this help at the end of the month after the yard sale is behind us. Please prayerfully consider being a part of this event. I appreciate all of the help you continually give to the various projects that I have the honor to lead. Please contact me with any suggestions or questions.
Thanks, Lois Snyder

PREACHER'S NOTES: I hope you received a blessing in last week’s worship service. The in-the-round seating gave us more intimate eye contact, though I thought some folks were a little off balance! The quartet was fabulous in all they did, and we really had a great “Sweat Equity” team that gave us a quick setup on short notice.
It has been said that “the work of the Church is Worship.” Good work gave us good worship and the Spirit moved and danced among us. Preacher
SUNDAY'S SERMON AND TEXT: “History’s Greatest Bailout” John 3:11-17
YEARLY CHARGE CONFERENCE will be held this Monday Sept. 29th at 7PM and is combined with First UMC of Snead’s Ferry. Faith Harbor will go first and be followed by a short worship service and then 1st UMC will hold their charge conference. In preparation for this meeting we have received communications from our District Superintendent that will enable the process to go more efficiently. In addition to the required reports there is also an option for Lay Leader, Council/Board Chair, Youth, and Presidents of the UMW and UMM to give a short report. These reports are NOT required but if you wish to give a short statement you may certainly do so. The Superintendent’s focus this year is on “what we WILL do, not what we have done”.
FRIDAY NIGHT COOKOUT – If you have a child VBS age or younger or have no children you are invited to join a group of young adults for fellowship. The kickoff will be a cookout at the home of Jennifer and Casey Taylor (329-0772) on Fri. Oct. 3rd. Childcare will be provided at church by members of our bAsiC Youth Group. Plans are to have a get together the first Friday of October, November and December and make future plans during these times of fellowship.
DATE CHANGE FOR OCTOBER FAMILY NIGHT DINNER – The October dinner will be October 8th instead of the 1st. Please plan to bring pot-luck, support our children in their “Trick or Treat for UNICEF” and have a screening of the Silent Auction Items.

Also included in the exhibition are more than 100 authentic artifacts from Qumran, the ancient settlement on the shores of the Dead Sea in Israel closest to the caves where the scrolls were discovered.
STEWARDSHIP MOMENT FROM JIM VAUGHN: What Does the Bible Say about Giving? By Herb Miller
A friend of mine, Gilbert Davis, tells about a “defining moment” he had in seminary. One day an elderly gentleman he had never met stopped Gilbert in the hallway. “Young man, are you studying to be a minister?” the man asked. When Gilbert replied that he was, the stranger asked if he might talk with him a few minutes. Although unsure of what he was getting into, Gilbert consented. (Several weeks later, he learned that Arthur A. Everetts owned what at that time was the largest jewelry store west of the Mississippi.) After leading Gilbert into an empty classroom, Everetts asked him whether he preached tithing in his student church. Before Gilbert could reply, Everetts gave him a forceful set of arguments for the value of tithing, especially for a young minister who ever hoped to amount to anything for Jesus Christ. At the end of that several-minute sermon, Everetts issued an altar call. Would Gilbert begin giving 10 percent of his income to God’s work? Finally getting a chance to speak, Gilbert drew himself up to his full theological stature at that youthful age and said, “But, sir, we are Christians now. We are New Testament people, not Old Testament. We are not under the Law; we are under Grace.” The old man replied with a question: “Young man, can you show me a verse in the New Testament that says less commitment is expected of a Christian under Grace than of a Jew under the Law? If you can, I will gladly subscribe to your position.” Since Jesus spoke so often about the power of money to distract us from God, why do the four gospel writers report Jesus saying so little about tithing? He did not need to. Jesus spoke primarily to Jewish people who for a thousand years had assumed that they should give 10 percent of their incomes to God. However, in the one New Testament verse where Jesus mentions the tithe, he affirms its value. Upbraiding the Pharisees because they think they are “super-spiritual,” Jesus calls them hypocrites. They carefully gave God 10 percent of everything—even their garden produce like dill, mint, and cumin. Yet, they failed to give their neighbors love, justice, and mercy. “These you ought to have practiced,” Jesus says, “without neglecting the others” (Mathew 23:23), referring to the tithe. The Christian faith is an attitude of the heart, not just a keeping of regulations. We give our money as an act of worship. We give our money as a way of seeking God’s spiritual kingdom first, not because a rule requires
us to give it. Yet, if Jesus assumes that giving 10 percent of your income is important, does it not seem wise for each of us to consider its value in strengthening our spiritual connection with God?
